Sat, 23 Dec 2006 Not much to say - got lots of pre-Christmas chores done today. Finally got to the Shoptask project fairly late in the evening, and made the brackets to support the top of the box. They are fastened to the box with three #10-32 screws threaded into the box wall and locktited. Hopefully the locktite will make a nice oil-proof seal. The brackets are fastened to the bench by nuts on 1/4-20 studs. I drilled a 2-1/4" deep #7 hole in the bench, then used a pair of locked nuts to screw a 3" length of 1/4-20 threaded rod into the hole. Normally using machine threads in wood isn't very strong, but 2" of thread engagement makes up for a lot. I wouldn't hesitate to stand on the box, which is a pretty decent criteria for ruggedness. And it can be easily removed by loosening the two 3/8" nuts on the bottom, and removing the 1/4" nuts on the sides. No fasteners need to be removed from wood (which would weaken the wood) or from the box itself (which would break the oil-tight seal). I'm happy. (posted: 23 Dec 2006 23:45) (permalink) |
