Sewer Work - day 3

Well, it was supposed to be finished today. It's not. But at least I can flush!

They did manage to get out the last piece of the old sewer pipe from the tunnel, and get in a piece of 5" PVC. That was a huge milestone - we were afraid that the dirt around the old pipe might collapse when it was removed, leaving a huge amount of hand digging. But it held:

By the end of the day, both the sanitary and storm sewers were piped. But the lack of an inspector meant that nothing could be filled in.

The first picture (in the basement) was taken about midnight, after I finished running the new condensate drain for the air conditioner. The cut-off piece of 3/4" plastic pipe in the upper right used to run into the floor drain there (the shower drain from the old bathroom). Originally they were going to install a wye in the main line, with a trap right next to the wall for the condensate drain. But the old line was 5", a non-standard size. The selection of 5" fittings is very limited, and reducers as needed to make a branch trap are not available. So instead of dropping right into the drain, I needed to re-route it to another floor drain about 23 feet away around a corner. The pair of 45 degree angles at the top right is part of the new line.

In the second picture (outside), the blue lines are the storm drains, connected to gutter downspouts and a drain in the driveway. The vertical white pipe is a sanitary cleanout next to the house. The main sanitary line is in the bottom of the trench, surrounded by solid bedrock.

So, the sewers work, but no water supply yet. They started digging by the "curb box" which contains the water company shutoff, but haven't gotten it completely uncovered. I'm still running on my neighbor's water, through a garden hose.
